The Cais de Altamira is the city's living room — a broad riverside promenade on the banks of the Xingu where locals jog, couples linger and street vendors ladle out steaming bowls of tacacá as the sun drops behind the forest canopy. The views across the wide, dark river to the tree line beyond are quietly magnificent.
Evening Ritual on the River
As the heat of the afternoon softens, the Cais fills with life. Children chase each other along the walkway, fishermen tie up their canoes, and the smell of açaí and fried snacks drifts from the kiosks that line the promenade. It is the kind of unpretentious, community-owned waterfront that bigger cities spend millions trying to recreate.
Find a bench facing west and wait for the Xingu sunset. The river is wide enough here that the sky reflects on the water in full, painting the surface in shades of amber and rose that no filter could improve.
Tacacá: The Drink You Must Try Here
Tacacá is Altamira's unofficial street food — a hot, bright-yellow broth made from tucupi, dried shrimp, jambu leaves and tapioca pearls served in a gourd. The jambu numbs your lips and tongue in a gentle, tingly wave that is equal parts alarming and addictive. The Cais vendors are among the best in the city.
The waterfront also functions as an informal transport hub where you can negotiate boat trips upriver or arrange a crossing to Praia do Tucunaré during the dry season. Linger long enough and you will inevitably be invited to share a table.
