The Castle Above the Vines
Haut-Koenigsbourg itself is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in France, rebuilt meticulously between 1900 and 1908 on the orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II and commanding a 360-degree view from the Rhine plain to the Vosges ridgeline. The keep, great hall and artillery bastions are all accessible on a self-guided tour.
The castle sits at 757 metres and is reached by a 4-kilometre road from Saint-Hippolyte; a free shuttle runs from the village car park in July and August, avoiding the summit parking fees.
Saint-Hippolyte and the Wine Route
Back in the village, the main square is flanked by three excellent small domaines offering free tastings: Domaine Fernand Engel, Domaine Vincent Stoeffler and Cave de Saint-Hippolyte all produce excellent Pinot Noir — unusually for Alsace, this corner of the Route des Vins is particularly noted for its red wines.
A signed 6-kilometre vineyard loop trail (the Sentier Viticole) departs from the village church and winds through grand cru Rangen and Frankstein plots before returning via a ridge with views of the castle silhouetted against the Vosges. Allow 2 hours and wear sturdy shoes in wet weather.
