Röthekopf Summit Viewpoint
At 793 metres, the Röthekopf is the dominant wooded hill directly above Alpirsbach's old town, and the cleared summit viewpoint rewards a 45-minute uphill walk with a sweeping arc of dark fir ridges, red-roofed farmsteads and, on clear days, the distant shimmer of the Swabian Alb to the east. It is the single best place to understand why people have been calling this landscape a 'black forest' for
The Ascent
The most direct route begins at the Friedhof (cemetery) on Friedhofstraße at the southern edge of town, picking up the red-diamond waymarker of the Schwarzwaldverein trail network within two minutes.
The path climbs steadily through mixed fir and beech, passing a small wooden shelter at the halfway point — useful if afternoon thunderstorms roll in, which they do with little warning in summer.
The View
The summit clearing faces predominantly south and east, giving an unobstructed view over the Kinzig valley as it bends below the town's monastery tower — the brewery chimney is visible too, which feels appropriate.
Sunrise visits in late spring, when low cloud fills the valley and only the ridgelines and the monastery spire poke above the white, produce the kind of photograph that looks implausibly cinematic.
Combining with a Loop
A popular circular route descends the western flank of the Röthekopf via the Schönblick trail, dropping back into town through the upper residential streets in about 30 minutes, making the full loop roughly 2.5 hours.
The Schwarzwaldverein trail map (Blatt 521, available at the tourist office) marks three further summit variations if you want to extend the day into the surrounding ridges.
