Kinzig Valley Trail (Kinzigtal-Wanderweg)
The Kinzigtal-Wanderweg follows the young River Kinzig as it carves a narrow, fern-lined valley directly through the heart of the Black Forest, with Alpirsbach sitting at one of its prettiest bends. Towering silver firs close in on both banks, the water is gin-clear, and the path is flat enough to feel like a reward rather than a workout.
The Walk from Town
Starting from the old town bridge (Stadtbrücke) in Alpirsbach, the southern section of the trail follows the river bank for roughly 6 km to the hamlet of Reinerzau, passing mossy weirs, wooden footbridges and the occasional trout darting under the surface.
The path is well-signed with the Kinzigtal diamond marker and is suitable for trail runners, families with older children and anyone who simply wants to stand in a forest and breathe for a while.
Wildlife & Seasonality
Spring brings white wood anemones carpeting the valley floor and the first dippers bobbing on mid-stream rocks; autumn turns the mixed forest above the firs into a blaze of copper and gold that reflects in the river.
Keep an eye out for kingfishers between June and August — the Kinzig's clear, shallow stretches are prime hunting ground and the electric-blue flash is genuinely startling in a dark forest corridor.
Practical Logistics
The trail is accessible year-round; the only caution is after heavy rain when the lower bank path can flood for short stretches — the upper forest path runs parallel and bypasses these sections.
Alpirsbach's Bahnhof is the perfect start and finish point: the Schwarzwaldbahn train means you can walk one direction and ride back, or continue further into the valley and return by rail.
