A Farm in the Forest
De Kemphaan is a city estate tucked into the Almeerderhout forest east of Almere Haven. The estate combines a working organic farm, a restaurant, a nature camping site and a weekend market in one gloriously green package. The Saturday market runs from 09:30 to 13:00 inside the estate's big barn, which means you shop under wooden beams whatever the weather.
Stalls overflow with certified organic bread, seasonal vegetables, dairy, meats and flowers. You can also pick up organic cleaning products and natural skincare — the kind of zero-waste shopping that feels genuinely good rather than performatively virtuous. The 'forgotten vegetables' stall — selling heritage varieties you won't find in any supermarket — is a particular delight for curious cooks.
Roos' Market Café and Beyond
After loading your canvas tote, reward yourself at Roos' Market Café, which operates inside the barn and serves homemade apple tart alongside proper coffee. It is the sort of slow, convivial Saturday morning that reminds you why farmers' markets exist.
The estate itself is worth exploring beyond the market. Walking and cycling routes thread through the surrounding Almeerderhout forest, and the on-site restaurant serves lunch with a terrace overlooking the fields. The Monkey Rescue foundation is also based here, adding an unexpected wildlife dimension to the visit.
