Almere Boven — Highest Hill in Flevoland
In a province famously flat enough to see the curvature of the Earth, Almere Boven is a genuine revelation — a man-made hill that spirals upward to 30 metres and rewards the climb with a 360-degree panorama over forests, lakes and the glittering skyline of one of Europe's most architecturally ambitious cities.
The Hill That Shouldn't Exist
Flevoland is the world's largest artificial land reclamation project, and almost every centimetre of it is pancake-flat. Almere Boven is therefore a deliberate act of civic poetry: a sculpted earthwork hill built in the Almeerderhout forest specifically to give residents and visitors a vantage point that nature forgot to provide.
A spiralling path winds upward through the trees to the summit at approximately 30 metres (around 100 feet). The ascent takes only 10–15 minutes on foot but feels genuinely rewarding — each loop of the path opens a new slice of the landscape below.
What You See from the Top
From the summit, the view sweeps over the dense canopy of the Almeerderhout, the glittering water of the Weerwater lake, and the distinctive skyline of Almere Centrum with its cluster of bold architectural statements. On clear days you can pick out the reed beds of the Oostvaardersplassen to the south and the IJmeer stretching towards Amsterdam to the west.
Sunset is the magic hour here. The low Dutch light turns the forest copper and the city skyline silhouettes against a wide, theatrical sky. Bring a blanket, a flask of something warm and no particular agenda.
Getting There and Combining Visits
Almere Boven sits within the Almeerderhout forest and is best reached by bike from Almere Haven or Almere Centrum — a pleasant 20–30 minute ride through forest paths. There is no entrance fee and no opening hours: the hill is accessible at any time of day or night.
Combine the visit with a walk in the Almeerderhout, a stop at the Buitencentrum Almeerderhout nature centre (which has a lovely waterside terrace for pancakes), or a Saturday morning trip to the De Kemphaan farmers' market just minutes away.
