La Défense — Almere's Secret Rainbow Courtyard

From the street it looks like an unremarkable office building on the edge of Almere Centrum. Step inside the courtyard, however, and special light-refracting foils in the windows explode into a dazzling cascade of rainbow colours — one of the most surprising and photogenic hidden gems in the entire Netherlands.

The Building That Hides Its Magic

La Défense is an office complex just outside Almere's city centre that has become a cult destination among architecture enthusiasts and photographers who know where to look. The exterior gives nothing away — it reads as a competent but unremarkable piece of commercial architecture. The revelation only comes when you pass through the entrance and enter the central courtyard.

There, the special prismatic foils embedded in the surrounding windows catch the sunlight at different angles throughout the day, scattering it into vivid bands of colour across the walls, floors and anyone standing in the space. The effect shifts constantly as the sun moves, making every visit — and every photograph — unique.

When and How to Visit

The colour show is most dramatic on sunny mornings and early afternoons when the sun is at a moderate angle and hits the courtyard windows directly. Overcast days produce a subtler, more diffuse effect. The building is freely accessible during office hours — simply walk through the main entrance and into the courtyard.

La Défense is a genuine local secret: well-known to Almere residents and architecture buffs but almost entirely absent from mainstream tourist itineraries. That means you are unlikely to share the courtyard with crowds, which makes the experience feel all the more like a personal discovery.

Pairing It with the Architecture Walk

La Défense sits within easy walking distance of the Almere Centrum architecture trail, making it a natural addition to any city walk. After soaking up the courtyard light show, head five minutes on foot to the Stadshart to compare it with the bold primary colours of the Smaragd and the glass curves of the City Hall.

For the best photos, position yourself in the centre of the courtyard and shoot upward toward the windows — the colour bands frame the sky in a way that looks almost computer-generated. Morning light (before noon) on a clear day gives the most saturated results.
