Canoe Lake Paddling Circuit
Canoe Lake is the spiritual heart of Algonquin Park — the same amber-tinted water that inspired Group of Seven painter Tom Thomson before his mysterious death here in 1917. Rent a canoe at Portage Store and within minutes you are threading between spruce-fringed islands with loons calling across the stillness.
On the Water
The classic day loop takes you from Canoe Lake north through Joe Lake and Tea Lake, a roughly 14-kilometre circuit with only one short portage. Paddling is unhurried and the reflections of white birch on flat-calm mornings are genuinely painterly.
Keep your eyes low to the water around dawn — common loons nest along the marshy eastern shore and will surface surprisingly close to a quiet canoe. Moose frequently wade the shallows of Joe Lake in early morning to feed on aquatic plants.
Practical Paddling Tips
Portage Store (open mid-May to mid-October) rents canoes by the hour or full day and also sells detailed waterproof canoe-route maps for the entire park. Staff can advise on current water levels and wind forecasts.
Interior camping permits are required for overnight trips and sell out fast on long weekends — book through the Ontario Parks reservation system months in advance. Day paddlers need only a park day-use permit, available at the gatehouse.
