Barron Canyon Trail

On the remote eastern edge of Algonquin, the Barron Canyon is a geological jaw-dropper that most visitors never find — a sheer-walled river gorge 100 metres deep carved by catastrophic post-glacial floods roughly 10,000 years ago. The short trail along the north rim delivers vertiginous views over the Barron River far below and an eerie, cathedral-like silence.

The Canyon Itself

The trail is only 1.5 kilometres return, making it accessible to almost anyone, yet the scenery is genuinely dramatic — pink Precambrian granite walls plunge straight down to a dark ribbon of river, and peregrine falcons nest in the cliff faces. Interpretive signs explain the catastrophic Lake Algonquin drainage event that gouged the canyon in a matter of weeks.

The canyon is particularly atmospheric on overcast days when mist collects in the gorge and the pink granite takes on a deep rose tone. In late September the canyon walls are framed by yellow birch and red maple clinging to every crack in the rock.

Getting There and Combining Visits

The trailhead is reached via the Achray Road, a 26-kilometre gravel road off Highway 17 near the town of Deux-Rivières — this is the eastern access to Algonquin, completely separate from the busy Highway 60 corridor and used by a fraction of visitors.

Combine the canyon with a paddle on the Barron River itself: Achray Campground at the end of the road offers canoe rentals and a launch point for the spectacular Barron River Canoe Route, a 2–4 day trip through the canyon by water. The eastern park is quieter, wilder and far less crowded than the western corridor.
