SVAI Molja Floating Sauna & Brosundet Canal

The Brosundet Canal is the scenic spine of Ålesund — a narrow waterway lined with Art Nouveau facades, moored fishing boats, and waterfront cafés — but its best-kept secret floats just beside the Molja Lighthouse: SVAI Molja, a floating sauna where you heat up, then leap into the open sea with Mount Aksla looming overhead. This is how locals actually spend a summer evening.

The Floating Sauna

SVAI Molja is anchored right in the heart of Ålesund near the Brosundet, offering stunning views of the sea, the Molja Lighthouse, and Mount Aksla from the sauna's small deck. You can swim in the sea year-round — the Norwegians are matter-of-fact about cold water — and the contrast between the heat of the sauna and the shock of the Atlantic is, once survived, genuinely addictive.

The experience is quintessentially Nordic: stripped back, close to nature, and utterly removed from tourist-trail anxiety. Book a session in advance, especially in summer, bring a towel and flip-flops, and let the ritual of heat-and-plunge reset your entire nervous system. After your session, the Molja Lighthouse pier is the perfect place for a quiet sunset walk.

Brosundet Canal by Kayak

While you are in the canal neighbourhood, rent a kayak and paddle through the Brosundet — the low waterline gives you an entirely different perspective on the Art Nouveau buildings that line the banks, their turrets and floral facades reflected in the still water. Several operators offer guided and self-guided kayak hire directly from the canal.

The canal area is also home to some of Ålesund's most characterful small businesses. Trankokeriet Antikk, a lovely antique shop in an old sea house nearby, is worth a browse — it is like a trip back in time, and a far more interesting souvenir hunt than any gift shop.

Evening in the Neighbourhood

As the sun dips toward the horizon — which in midsummer does not happen until after 10 pm — the Brosundet waterfront comes alive with locals at outdoor café tables. Maki at Brosundet is a well-regarded address for modern Norwegian cuisine with a strong seafood focus, and its tasting menus make a fitting finale to a day spent on and in the water. The neighbourhood rewards slow wandering: every alley reveals another ornate doorway or a perfectly framed view of the water.
