Aksla – Fjellstua Viewpoint
Every postcard of Ålesund is shot from this spot, and yet no photograph fully prepares you for the moment the city, the archipelago, and the snow-capped Sunnmøre Alps snap into view all at once. Climbing Mount Aksla's 418 stone steps from Byparken is the single most rewarding 20-minute effort in western Norway.
The Climb & the Panorama
The hike begins at Byparken, Ålesund's leafy central park, a short walk from virtually anywhere in the city centre — and even from the cruise terminal, it is only about ten minutes on foot to the first step. The stone staircase winds steadily upward, with teasing glimpses of rooftops and water between the trees, before the summit terrace opens up into a full 360-degree panorama of the city, the surrounding island archipelago, and the majestic Sunnmøre Alps beyond.
At the top you will find the Fjellstua restaurant and café, with an outdoor terrace perfectly positioned for a post-climb coffee while the view does all the work. A wraparound upper terrace offers the most unobstructed sightlines — arrive at golden hour or blue hour for photographs that practically take themselves.
Beyond the Classic Shot
Most visitors reach the terrace and turn back, but the ridge rewards those who linger. A statue of writer Kristofer Randers stands near the café, and paths further along reveal old World War II bunkers and defensive positions tucked into the hillside — a sobering counterpoint to the beauty below. The secondary viewpoint called Kniven, a short walk further along the ridge, offers a slightly different angle over the western islands.
Heavy tourist buses are no longer permitted on the access road, so the summit feels calmer than it once did. The small tourist road train, Bytoget, still runs from the cruise terminal to the top when weather permits — a good option for families or anyone who prefers wheels to steps.
Timing Your Visit
The viewpoint is always accessible and free to reach on foot; the Fjellstua café has seasonal hours, so check ahead if you are counting on a hot drink at the top. Summer sunsets here can last past 11 pm, bathing the Art Nouveau rooftops in amber light — plan an evening ascent if you can. In winter, a clear day rewards you with snow-dusted Alps and a near-empty terrace.
