Sjøbua Restaurant & Fisketorget Fish Market
Ålesund is one of Norway's most important fishing ports, and eating seafood here is not a tourist activity — it is simply what people do. Sjøbua, a converted historic warehouse on the waterfront, and the Fisketorget fish market together give you the full spectrum of that ocean-fresh tradition, from white-tablecloth shellfish to shrimp eaten straight from a paper bag on the quayside.
Sjøbua: The Warehouse Table
Sjøbua sits in a historic harbour warehouse and serves exquisite fish and shellfish dishes that draw on the day's catch from the surrounding waters. The menu leans into Norwegian coastal classics — expect impeccably fresh cod, plump scallops, and crab prepared with a light modern touch. The harbour-view setting, with boats moored just outside the window, makes every plate taste better.
Reservations are strongly recommended for evening dining, particularly in summer when the restaurant fills quickly with both locals and visitors. Main courses typically run 500–800 NOK — not cheap, but the quality of the seafood justifies every krone.
Fisketorget & the Bakeries
For a more spontaneous feed, head to Fisketorget, Ålesund's fish market, where you can buy fresh seafood directly from fishermen and pick up ready-to-eat shrimp or fish cakes from market stalls. It is one of the most genuine and affordable ways to taste the city's maritime soul without sitting down at a restaurant.
Do not skip the local bakeries either — Norwegian baking culture runs deep here, and local bakers turn out fresh skillingsboller (cinnamon buns), cardamom-spiced sweet buns, and dense rye loaves each morning. Invit Espressobar is a popular local coffee stop, and Racoon in Kongens gate is a favourite for a slow breakfast while the city wakes up around you.
What to Order
Bacalao — salt cod prepared in the Portuguese tradition, a legacy of Ålesund's centuries-long trading ties — is a local speciality worth ordering wherever you see it on a menu. Anno Restaurant on Apotekergata 9B is another reliable address for pan-fried cod tongues and what the kitchen boldly calls 'the best fish soup in town'. Local provenance is strong across the board: the sea is rarely more than a few hundred metres away.
