Mirador del Castillo & Río Guadalope Bend
The natural terrace just below the castle walls offers one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the whole of Bajo Aragón — a dizzying drop to the Guadalope river as it curves through its gorge, with the patchwork of olive and almond groves spreading out to the Sierra de Arcos beyond. It costs nothing and takes five minutes to reach on foot from the Plaza de España.
The view from the top
From the mirador you can trace the entire layout of the medieval town below — the collegiate church tower, the tiled rooftops of the Barrio Antiguo and the long Roman-era bridge over the Guadalope all slot together like a perfect scale model.
On clear winter mornings after rain, the distant peaks of the Maestrazgo are dusted with snow, adding a dramatic backdrop to the warm ochre tones of the town. This is the shot that defines Alcañiz on every travel poster.
Best times and how to get there
Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the magic windows — the low light rakes across the castle stonework and turns the river below into a ribbon of hammered copper.
Walk up Calle Bajada del Castillo from the Plaza de España (about 10 minutes at a gentle pace) or drive up and park in the small lot beside the parador. The viewpoint itself is an unfenced terrace, so keep children close to the edge.
