Mercado Medieval de Alcañiz
Every spring, the streets of Alcañiz's historic centre transform into a sprawling medieval market that draws thousands of visitors from across Aragon and beyond. Craft stalls, period costumes, fire-jugglers and the smell of roasting meat fill the Plaza de España and the surrounding lanes for an entire weekend.
What to expect at the stalls
Dozens of artisan vendors set up under canvas awnings to sell hand-forged ironwork, leather goods, beeswax candles, herbal remedies and hand-thrown ceramics — all presented in keeping with the medieval theme and many genuinely crafted using traditional techniques.
Local food producers bring Bajo Aragón olive oil, DOP-certified saffron (among the finest in Spain), honey from the Maestrazgo hills and cured meats, making this as much a gourmet shopping stop as a cultural spectacle.
The setting makes it special
The market spills across the magnificent Plaza de España, flanked by the arcaded Renaissance town hall and the imposing collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor — a backdrop so cinematic it barely needs the costumes to feel medieval.
Arrive on Saturday morning before the crowds thicken; the atmosphere is festive but the narrow streets fill quickly, and the best artisan pieces sell out by early afternoon.
