Super Potato — Retro Gaming Shrine on Beii-cho Street
Tucked into a narrow side street near Bic Camera, Super Potato is the world's most famous retro video-game shop — a five-storey temple to cartridges, controllers and consoles you thought were lost to history. The fifth floor is a working retro arcade where you can actually play the machines.
A Treasure Chest for Gamers
Super Potato is dedicated entirely to video games and consoles with a preference for older generations — Famicom, Super Famicom, PC Engine, Mega Drive, Neo Geo — all displayed in excellent condition and generally at fair prices. It is so retro that sometimes, while wandering around, it is hard to recognise games or consoles.
The shop is a reference retro-gaming retailer in Akihabara, located in the electronic district bordered by Chiyoda and Taito wards. Without Google Maps it can be tricky to find, nestled in a narrow street, but that hunt is part of the fun.
The Playable Fifth Floor
The top floor is where Super Potato earns its legendary status: rows of classic arcade cabinets sit ready to play, letting you drop coins into machines running titles from the 1980s and 1990s. Playing physical joysticks and buttons delivers a tactile experience that touchscreens and modern controllers simply cannot replicate.
Nearby, the store called Beep is another excellent stop for retro software and hardware — between the two shops, you will find all your favourite retro games and even titles you have never heard of before.
