Kanda Myojin Shrine — Tokyo's 1,300-Year-Old Tech Patron

A ten-minute walk uphill from the neon chaos of Akihabara, Kanda Myojin Shrine is a breathtaking Edo-period Shinto sanctuary dedicated to the guardian deity of Tokyo — and, uniquely, the patron saint of Japan's tech industry. The contrast with the arcade sounds you just left behind is immediate and profound.

History Meets Otaku Culture

Kanda Myojin is a 1,300-year-old shrine where the guardian deity of Tokyo is enshrined, and it has a fascinating modern twist: it regularly collaborates with popular anime and manga series, with limited-edition ema prayer plaques featuring beloved characters appearing during special events. The shrine sells tech-themed charms — amulets for protecting your electronics or bringing luck in technology-related jobs — that make for the most original souvenir in the district.

IT professionals from across Japan make pilgrimages here to seek blessings for their work, making Kanda Myojin a genuinely living shrine rather than a museum piece. The shrine hosts the Kanda Matsuri, one of Tokyo's three great festivals, in mid-May in odd-numbered years, with grand processions passing near Akihabara.

When to Visit and What to See

Visit early in the morning for the best photographs — the vermilion gate and main hall glow against the sky before the crowds arrive. At night, subtle lighting gives the shrine a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with Akihabara's electric streets just down the hill.

The surrounding Kanda neighbourhood is worth exploring too: just nearby, Kanda Flux is a sci-fi bar with an interior themed around characters and design from across the genre, and a drink menu inspired by Hollywood sci-fi and space-related hits — a surreal post-shrine pit stop.
