Marché du Cours Mirabeau & Marché Provençal
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, the streets around Place Richelme and the Cours Mirabeau erupt into a riot of colour, scent and chatter. This is Provence distilled into a single hour: tapenade spooned onto bread crusts, honey the colour of amber, and bundles of dried lavender pressed into your hands by vendors who have held the same pitch for decades.
What to buy and where
The Marché Provençal on Place Richelme is the food market, a compact square shaded by plane trees where farmers sell goat's cheese rolled in ash, fat Marmande tomatoes, and herbes de Provence tied with raffia. Arrive before 9 am to beat the crowds and catch producers restocking their stalls.
A few steps away on the Cours Mirabeau itself, a flower and craft market spreads along the central boulevard, with santons figurines, Souleiado-print fabrics and hand-thrown pottery sitting alongside cut flowers. It is a browser's paradise, but vendors expect genuine interest before they talk price.
On Saturdays a larger bric-a-brac and antique extension spills onto Place de Verdun, where you can hunt for vintage Marseille soap moulds, old pétanque boules and dog-eared postcards of 1960s Aix.
Eating and drinking around the market
After shopping, join locals at Les Deux Garçons, the legendary 1792 café on the Cours Mirabeau, for a café crème and a croissant on the terrace. The gilded interior is worth a peek even if you only order water.
For something more substantial, the covered Halles d'Aix on Place Richelme offer hot traiteur dishes — a plate of petits farcis or a slice of pissaladière eaten standing at the counter costs under €6 and tastes like a proper Provençal lunch.
Practical tips
Bring a canvas tote and small euro notes; most stall holders prefer cash and will round down the price if you are friendly. Card readers are rare at the food stalls.
Parking is brutal on market mornings. Use the Parking Mignet underground car park on Rue Mignet and walk five minutes to Place Richelme, or arrive by the Navette shuttle bus from the TGV station.
