Cours Mirabeau

Lined with four rows of towering plane trees that knit into a cathedral-like canopy overhead, the Cours Mirabeau is the beating heart of Aix-en-Provence. Fountains, mansion facades and pavement cafés make every stroll feel like a scene from a French film.

Architecture and fountains

The 440-metre boulevard was laid out in 1651 on the site of the old city ramparts, and the hôtels particuliers lining its south side — built for the Provençal nobility — are among the finest 17th- and 18th-century town houses in France. Look up at the carved stone mascarons above doorways: each one is different, depicting gods, seasons and mythological beasts.

Three fountains punctuate the length of the Cours. The most beloved is the Fontaine Moussue (La Rotonde end), a mossy, thermal-spring-fed basin whose warm water keeps it permanently green and slightly steaming in winter. At the far eastern end, the Fontaine du Roi René honours the 15th-century count who introduced Muscat grapes to Provence, depicted holding a bunch.

At the very centre stands the Fontaine des Neuf-Canons (1691), a clean classical basin used historically as a watering point for livestock driven through the city.

Best time to walk it

The Cours is magical at any hour, but the early-morning light filtering through the plane trees between 08:00 and 09:30 is extraordinary — photographers call this the green tunnel effect when the leaves are fully out from May to October.

Sunday afternoons see families, students and elderly pétanque players sharing the boulevard in a relaxed procession. The café terraces are fullest between 16:00 and 18:00 when the sun drops below the roofline and the stone glows gold.

What's nearby

The Cours connects Place de la Rotonde (with its large 19th-century fountain and the tourist office) at the west end to Place Forbin at the east. The Vieil Aix (old town) lies immediately to the north and is best explored on foot from the Cours.

Rue Clemenceau and Rue Espariat, both leading north off the Cours, are the best shopping streets for independent boutiques, olive-oil shops and Provençal linen stores.
