Cala Cerrada
Tucked inside the protected zone of the Paraje Natural Calnegre y Cabo Cope, Cala Cerrada is a small, perfectly curved pebble-and-sand beach flanked by dark volcanic rock that turns the shallow water an impossible shade of emerald. There is no road access, no beach bar and no sunbed rental — which is precisely the point.
Finding the cove
The most straightforward approach is a 25-minute walk south along the coastal trail from the car park at Playa de la Galera, following the red-and-white waymarks of the GR-92. The path hugs the cliff edge and the views back towards the Cabo Cope lighthouse are spectacular.
Alternatively, in summer a small water-taxi service operates from Águilas harbour to several of the protected coves in this stretch — ask at the tourist office on Calle Antonio Garres for the current operator and timetable.
What makes it special
The water clarity here is among the best on the Murcia coast because the entire Calnegre headland is a protected natural area with no development — no runoff, no anchored motorboats, no jet skis. Bring a snorkel mask and fin over the posidonia seagrass meadows that begin just a few metres from the shore.
The cove faces south-east, so it catches the morning sun perfectly and is shaded by the cliff by mid-afternoon, making it a surprisingly comfortable spot even in the height of August.
