Scala dei Turchi, Realmonte
Thirty kilometres west of Agrigento, a blindingly white marl cliff drops in natural stepped terraces straight into a sea so blue it looks digitally enhanced. The Scala dei Turchi — Staircase of the Turks — is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in all of Sicily, and the view from the top tier at sunset is nothing short of cinematic.
The Cliff, the Legend & the Light
The name derives from the Arabic and Ottoman sailors who allegedly sheltered in the cliff's natural coves during storms — the white terraces resembling a grand staircase leading up from the water. The rock itself is pure white marl limestone, sculpted by millennia of wind and wave erosion into smooth, layered shelves that cascade down to the beach.
The best time to visit is late afternoon, when the low Sicilian sun turns the cliff a warm ivory-gold and the sea shifts from turquoise to deep indigo. Photographers routinely rank this among the top ten sunset viewpoints in Italy. Climb to the highest terrace for the full panorama — the view along the coastline in both directions is spectacular.
The beach directly below, Spiaggia di Scala dei Turchi, is a fine sandy arc that fills up in July and August but remains relatively uncrowded in May, June and September. The water is crystal-clear and shallow enough for safe swimming close to shore.
Getting There & Practical Notes
From Agrigento, the easiest approach is by car or scooter — the drive takes around 30 minutes via the SP68. Parking is available in Realmonte village, from where a short path leads to the cliff. In summer, shuttle buses run from Agrigento and Porto Empedocle.
Note that access to the cliff itself has been subject to seasonal restrictions in recent years to protect the fragile marl surface from erosion caused by heavy foot traffic. Always check current regulations before visiting, as fines apply for walking on restricted sections.
Combine the Scala dei Turchi with a stop at the nearby beach town of Realmonte and the ancient Greek-Sicilian site of Eraclea Minoa, just 15 km further west, for a full and rewarding coastal day trip.
