Le Boccerie & Via Atenea Food Scene
Via Atenea is the beating heart of Agrigento's old town — a long, sun-dappled avenue of baroque palazzi, independent cafes, and food shops that rewards a slow, hungry stroll. Le Boccerie at Via Atenea 231 is the standout modern address in town — a food-lab bistro run by chef Alessandro Ravanà, a graduate of celebrated Sicilian chef Pino Cuttaia's kitchen. The menu is wide and democratic: broad bean macco, glazed slow-cooked shin, gourmet pizzas, and sandwiches packed with local Girgentana goat cheeses and black pork salumi sit happily alongside each other.
In summer the kitchen switches to dinner-only, but for the rest of the year it operates all-day — from a morning bread counter and charcuterie selection through to a full evening menu. The pistachio couscous is a must-order: it nods directly to Agrigento's Arab-Sicilian culinary roots and is one of the most quietly brilliant plates in the city.
Next door, the Buvette cocktail bar serves a serious, well-prepared drinks menu — making Le Boccerie the perfect spot for an aperitivo before dinner, especially on a warm evening when the small outdoor terrace fills with locals.
Street Food, Markets & Sicilian Staples
For street food, hunt down arancine (rice balls), panelle (chickpea fritters), and sfincione (thick-crust Sicilian pizza) from the rosticcerie and bakeries scattered along and just off Via Atenea. These are the snacks Agrigentini eat standing up, and they cost almost nothing.
The Mercato di Campagna Amica offers a genuine window into local produce — seasonal vegetables, wheels of caciocavallo and pecorino, citrus from the valley, and fresh-caught anchovies and sardines from the nearby coast. It is the best place to assemble a picnic before heading to the temples.
For a full sit-down dinner with a view, La Terrazza degli Dei on Via Passeggiata Archeologica 33 offers an elegant terrace looking directly onto the floodlit Temple of Concordia — a theatrical backdrop that justifies the higher price point. Book ahead in summer.
