Saebyeol Oreum
Saebyeol Oreum is Aewol's own parasitic volcanic cone — a gentle grassy hill whose summit rewards a short hike with sweeping 360-degree views stretching from the sea to Hallasan's silhouette. Its solitary wind-bent tree on the crater rim has become one of Jeju's most-photographed natural icons.
The climb and the crater
The trail to the top of Saebyeol Oreum is short — most visitors reach the rim in under 30 minutes — but the payoff is disproportionately grand. The crater bowl is lush and quiet, ringed by the kind of rolling green that makes you forget there's an entire island below you.
The lone tree near the summit is the real star. Battered by coastal winds into a perfect natural sculpture, it stands against open sky in a way that makes every photo look considered. Arrive at golden hour and the light turns the grass amber.
When to go and what to bring
Early morning visits reward you with mist drifting across the crater and almost no other hikers. The oreum sits just a couple of kilometres from Arte Museum, making it a natural pairing on a west-Aewol day.
Wear sturdy shoes — the path can be slippery after rain — and bring a windbreaker; the summit is exposed and the sea breeze is persistent even in summer.
