Aewol Cafe Street (Handam Coastal Road)
The stretch of coastline running through Aewol's Handam area is lined with some of the most photogenic independent cafes in all of South Korea — each one perched above black basalt rocks with the East China Sea glittering below. This is Jeju's most talked-about neighbourhood for slow mornings and long afternoons.
The street and its stars
Aewol Cafe Street has evolved from a quiet fishing-village road into a parade of artisanal coffee shops, each competing to out-design the last. Café Bomnal sits right on the waterfront with front-row seats to the sea, and also sells cute corgi-themed merchandise. Café Knotted — famous islandwide for its cream-filled doughnuts — and Randy Donuts both have outposts here.
HaeJiGae Bakery Café is another anchor of the strip, combining serious sourdough and pastries with a vast, unobstructed view of the coastline. The combination of good taste and breathtaking views makes it hard to leave after just one coffee.
How to work the strip
The coastal boardwalk that runs alongside the cafes is perfect for a stroll between stops — you can snap the volcanic rock formations at your feet and the open ocean horizon in the same frame. The area is best on a clear afternoon when the sea shifts from grey to brilliant turquoise.
Aewol is one of Jeju's most scenic coastal areas, known for its seaside cafes and sunset views, making it a natural base for couples and photographers. Rent a car to hop between spots at your own pace, as public buses run infrequently.
