Hallim Traditional 5-Day Market
The largest traditional market in western Jeju, Hallim 5-Day Market is where locals from Aewol and the surrounding townships have shopped for generations — and where you can eat some of the most authentic food on the island for the price of a bus ticket. It only opens on days ending in 4 or 9, which makes timing your visit feel like a small adventure.
What to eat and buy
The market's most famous stall sells bingtteok — Jeju's own buckwheat crepe stuffed with seasoned radish and pork, folded and eaten straight from the griddle. Alongside it you'll find omegi tteok (chewy millet rice cakes dusted with red-bean powder), fresh tangerines by the bagful, and vendors selling dried seafood and medicinal herbs.
Beyond the food, the market is a genuine cross-section of Jeju rural life: stalls piled with vegetables, grains, imported goods and clothing sit alongside grandmothers haggling in the local dialect. It is the kind of market that feels lived-in rather than curated for tourists.

The market opens on dates ending in 4 and 9 each month — so the 4th, 9th, 14th, 19th, 24th and 29th. Check the calendar before you go; showing up on the wrong day means an empty car park and closed stalls.
Hallim is a short drive west of central Aewol, making it easy to combine with a morning at Hyeopjae Beach or an afternoon at Hallim Park. Arrive early — by 10:00 — when the produce is freshest and the atmosphere is at its liveliest.
