Yellow Arrow Track, Mt Whitfield Conservation Park
Starting right from the Yellow Arrow car park in Aeroglen, this accessible rainforest trail climbs through lush tropical greenery to a grassy hilltop lookout where you can watch jets lift off over the Coral Sea — one of the most unexpectedly cinematic views in all of Cairns.
From suburb to summit in 45 minutes
The Yellow Arrow Track departs from the Aeroglen car park and follows a well-marked, colour-coded trail system into Mt Whitfield Conservation Park. The path uses a clever 'climb-rest-climb' design, alternating steep bursts with flat recovery sections, so even casual walkers can reach the top without agony. Along the way you pass small seasonal waterfalls, giant strangler figs, and dense walls of wait-a-while palm.
The grassy lookout at the top frames a panorama that is genuinely hard to believe: the Cairns Airport runway in the foreground, Trinity Inlet and the Coral Sea glittering behind it, and on a clear day the green hump of Green Island on the horizon. Sunrise walkers get the full colour show.

The Yellow Arrow connects at the top to the Blue Arrow loop, which circles the broader ridge of Mt Whitfield and eventually reaches the Lumley Hill lookout with its northward view over the Northern Beaches. Combining Yellow and Blue takes four to five hours and delivers genuine tropical rainforest immersion without leaving the city boundary.
The Red Arrow — a steeper, faster 'power trail' — also intersects the network, looping back to Aeroglen via Collins Avenue and Saltwater Creek. Mix and match the colour-coded trails to suit your time and energy.
