Rusty's Markets, Cairns CBD

A 10-minute drive from Aeroglen, Rusty's Markets on Grafton Street is the beating culinary heart of Cairns — 180-plus stalls where Far North Queensland farmers sell rambutans, mangosteens, jackfruit, and a dozen varieties of banana direct from their own land. Come hungry, come early, and come with an empty bag.

A produce hall like nowhere else on earth

Rusty's has been a fixture of Cairns life since 1975, founded by the late Emrys 'Rusty' Rees and grown from six stalls into the sprawling, fragrant institution it is today. The fresh fruit and vegetables are grown regionally and sold by the farmers themselves, which means the rambutans were on the tree yesterday and the prices are a fraction of any supermarket.

Exotic tropical varieties dominate — mangosteens, lychees, jackfruit, longans, star fruit, soursop, and dozens of mango cultivars sit alongside conventional tropical staples like pawpaw, pineapple, and passionfruit. The colour and fragrance together are genuinely intoxicating, and buying a bag of seasonal fruit to eat back at your accommodation is one of the great simple pleasures of any Cairns trip.

Street food, crafts, and live music

Beyond the produce, Rusty's delivers a full morning out. Food stalls span Thai papaya salad, Vietnamese coffee, fresh spring rolls, samosas, sushi, and coconut bowls. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stallholders sell indigenous foods and crafts, and local jewellers and clothing designers fill the gaps between the vegetable pyramids.

Live musicians perform every weekend, making the covered market feel more like a festival than a shopping errand. Arrive early on Friday morning for the most relaxed experience and the easiest parking — Saturday and Sunday draw the biggest crowds.
