Cairns Esplanade Lagoon & Boardwalk

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming pool sitting right on the city waterfront, stinger-free and lifeguard-patrolled year-round, with the Coral Sea glittering beyond the seawall and the rainforest-clad ranges framing the skyline behind you. It is the perfect reward after a morning on the Aeroglen trails.

The world's best free city swim

Cairns sits in tropical waters that are home to box jellyfish and saltwater crocodiles, making open-water swimming genuinely dangerous for much of the year. The Esplanade Lagoon solves that problem with elegance: its filtered saltwater is completely free of marine stingers and wildlife, the pool has separate deep-swim and shallow family zones, and lifeguards patrol throughout opening hours. Entry is completely free, every single day.

The iconic Woven Fish sculpture stands in the centre of the lagoon, a landmark that doubles as a shaded perch for pelicans at dawn. Surrounding the pool are manicured lawns shaded by enormous Banyan trees, 12 free public BBQ facilities cleaned daily, and a foreshore boardwalk that stretches for kilometres in both directions.

Sunset, boardwalk, and the full Esplanade experience

The Esplanade boardwalk running alongside the lagoon is one of the finest urban waterfront walks in Australia. At sunrise, joggers and cyclists share the path with wading birds picking through the tidal mudflats. By late afternoon the lawn fills with families, and as the sun drops behind the ranges the sky over Trinity Inlet turns every shade of pink and orange — a nightly spectacle that never gets old.

The surrounding dining precinct offers everything from casual gelato bars to fine-dining restaurants with open terraces over the water. The Cairns Aquarium, which opened in 2017 and houses over 16,000 sea creatures across 10 distinct ecosystems, is a five-minute walk along the boardwalk — ideal for a half-day that covers both the lagoon and a deep dive into reef ecology.
