Adelaide Central Market
Running since 1869, Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh-produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere — a sensory riot of sourdough, charcuterie, spice and coffee that locals treat as a weekly ritual. Spend a morning grazing your way through 70-plus stalls and you'll understand why Adelaide punches so far above its weight as a food city.
What to eat and buy
Start at Lucia's Pizza & Spaghetti Bar, a market institution since 1957, for a flat white and a pastry before the crowds arrive. Then work your way to the Smelly Cheese Shop for a wedge of King Island Roaring Forties Blue, and Providore for single-origin olive oils from the Barossa and Clare valleys.
The produce stalls in the centre aisles sell SA-grown almonds, Riverland citrus and McLaren Vale olives at prices that shame any supermarket. Pick up a canvas bag at the entrance — you will fill it.
Planning your visit
The market runs Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with Saturday being the liveliest but also the most crowded. Arrive before 9 am on a Saturday to snag a stool at the Providore espresso bar and watch the market wake up.
A free guided Tasting Tour runs most Saturdays — book through the market website for a structured introduction to a dozen stallholders in 90 minutes. The adjacent Gouger Street restaurant strip makes a natural lunch extension after shopping.
