Zinc Restaurant, Abersoch

Zinc has been the benchmark for quality dining in Abersoch for well over a decade, occupying a converted space steps from the harbour with a terrace that looks directly out over the moored boats. The kitchen leans hard into Welsh and locally landed ingredients — Cardigan Bay crab, Llŷn lamb, Harlech asparagus in season — without ever feeling precious about it.

What to Order

The crab bisque with sourdough croutons is a near-permanent fixture on the menu and is as good a version as you'll find anywhere in Wales — rich, deeply flavoured and made with whole crabs landed at nearby Pwllheli harbour.

For mains, the slow-roasted Llŷn lamb shoulder with laverbread butter and samphire is the dish that regulars return for specifically. Laverbread — a Welsh seaweed paste — adds a briny umami note that makes the lamb sing.

Atmosphere and Booking

The interior is relaxed but polished: bare wooden tables, a good Welsh wine and spirits list featuring Penderyn whisky and Hepple gin, and staff who know the menu inside out without being stuffy about it.

Booking is essential from June through August; the restaurant fills weeks in advance during peak season. Shoulder season visits in May or September are often more relaxed and the set lunch menu represents exceptional value.

Breakfast and the Harbour Morning

Zinc also opens for weekend breakfasts in summer, and a plate of their smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on the terrace while the sailing club prepares for a morning race is one of those simple pleasures that justifies the trip entirely.

The harbour itself is worth a slow wander after eating — fishing boats, RIBs and gleaming yachts jostle for space in a genuinely working small-boat harbour that hasn't been sanitised for tourists.
