Mynydd Tir-y-Cwmwd Headland
The grassy headland of Mynydd Tir-y-Cwmwd, rising to around 141 metres just south of Llanbedrog, delivers one of the most rewarding short walks on the entire Llŷn Peninsula. From the iron-age hillfort remains at its summit you can see Abersoch bay spread below you, Cardigan Bay stretching south and, on clear days, the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland hovering on the horizon.
The Walk Up and What You'll See
The most popular route starts from Llanbedrog beach car park, a 15-minute drive from Abersoch village, and follows a well-marked path through National Trust-managed land to the ridge. The ascent takes around 25 minutes at a gentle pace and is suitable for fit older children.
At the top, a striking tin-man sculpture — a replacement of a long-standing landmark figure — marks the highest point and makes an unmistakable photo subject with the bay behind it. The views down to Llanbedrog's own sandy beach and the turquoise water of the bay are genuinely breath-taking.
Wildlife and Wildflowers
The headland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest partly because of its maritime heath, which erupts in purple heather in August and September. Choughs — the red-billed crow that is the symbol of Wales — nest in the cliffs below and can often be spotted riding thermals along the ridge.
Peregrine falcons also hunt this stretch of coast regularly; bring binoculars and scan the cliff edges in the early morning for the best chance of a sighting.
Combining with Llanbedrog Beach
Descend the north side of the headland and you arrive directly onto Llanbedrog beach, a quieter and arguably prettier alternative to Abersoch's main beach, backed by wooded slopes and with a National Trust-run beach café at its southern end.
This makes the loop — Llanbedrog car park, up and over the headland, along the beach and back — one of the finest two-hour outings in the area, combining a hill walk, panoramic views, wildlife and a swim in a single outing.
