Porth Ceiriad Beach

Just two miles east of Abersoch village, Porth Ceiriad is the beach that locals quietly direct their most trusted friends to — a wide, west-facing bay backed by dramatic glacial cliffs with no café, no car park at the sand's edge and no jet skis. The walk in keeps the crowds thin even in August.

Getting There and the Reward

Park at the small National Trust car park above the bay on the lane off the B4413 and follow the coastal path down through gorse and bracken for around 15 minutes. The descent is steep in places so footwear with grip is sensible, but the effort is minimal relative to what awaits.

The beach itself is around 600 metres of coarse golden sand flanked by crumbling clay and shale cliffs streaked with iron-red seams. At low tide, rock pools appear at both ends of the bay and are excellent for children hunting crabs and anemones.

Surfing and Swimming

Porth Ceiriad faces west-southwest and picks up Atlantic swell that Abersoch's main beach, sheltered by the headland, largely misses. This makes it the go-to spot for the local surf community when a proper swell is running — expect head-high waves on a good autumn day.

Swimming is excellent in the central part of the bay in calm conditions, but the rip currents at either end near the cliff bases should be respected. Swim parallel to shore if you feel any pull and stay in the middle third of the beach.

Sunset and Solitude

Because the beach faces west, Porth Ceiriad is arguably the finest sunset-watching spot on this stretch of the Llŷn Peninsula. The cliffs glow amber and the sea turns copper in the last hour of light — bring a flask and a blanket and stay late.

In winter the beach is almost entirely deserted and the cliff-top walk along the Llŷn Coastal Path above the bay, continuing toward the headland of Trwyn Cilan, is wild and exhilarating in a way that summer crowds make impossible to feel at Abersoch itself.
