Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market

Built in 1950, this is the oldest and largest wholesale fish market in Hong Kong, supplying over 70 per cent of the city's live seafood — and its canteen opens at 4am, long before most of the city has stirred. Come early, come hungry.

The Market Itself

The Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market sits just west of the promenade and is at its thunderous, chaotic best first thing in the morning, when buyers haggle over tanks of live grouper, mantis shrimp and mud crab straight off the boats.

Stalls sell fresh and dried seafood directly to the public, and the salty, briny air alone is worth the early alarm — this is the engine room of Hong Kong's legendary seafood culture.

Eating at the Source

Inside the market, the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter Kitchen is a beloved indoor dai pai dong where signatures include creamy long-boiled fish broth, soy-braised prawns and wok-fried sweet-and-sour pork ribs, all cooked to order with fishermen-fresh ingredients.

The kitchen preserves true typhoon-shelter-style cooking — bold, unfussy and deeply local — in a setting that feels a world away from the polished restaurants of Central.

Combining with Aberdeen Market

A five-minute walk inland brings you to the newly renovated Aberdeen Market, which reopened in April 2023 with 142 stalls across three floors: a wet market on the ground floor, a food court on the second, and groceries, flowers and clothes on the third.

Some stalls will cook seafood you bring from the ground floor for a small fee — order a catty of salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp and claim a table upstairs for an entirely local lunch.
