A Village Still Afloat
Aberdeen is a seaside community on the southwest side of Hong Kong Island whose Tanka fisherfolk once lived their entire lives on the water, and traces of that floating village survive inside the typhoon shelter to this day.
Hundreds of junks and sampans crowd the narrow harbour, dramatically juxtaposed against modern high-rises that climb the surrounding hillsides — a collision of eras you won't find anywhere else on the island.
How the Ride Works
Sightseeing sampans cluster near the Ap Lei Chau bridge; the ride lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and cash is the only payment accepted, so come prepared.
You'll pass fish-drying racks, moored trawlers and the spot where the legendary Jumbo floating restaurant once blazed neon-red across the water — a cinematic backdrop that has appeared in everything from James Bond films to Godzilla sequels.
Timing Your Visit
Mornings are liveliest, when working boats return from overnight runs and the wholesale market hums at full throttle alongside the promenade.
Summer months fill the shelter with even more vessels, but October to March brings cooler, clearer skies that make harbour photography far more rewarding.
