Into the Park

Aberdeen Country Park is a 423-hectare expanse of rolling hills, secondary forests and historic reservoirs on the southern flank of Hong Kong Island, and its proximity to residential streets makes it a beloved escape for locals seeking a quick green fix.

The easy Aberdeen Reservoir Road trail skirts the western side of both reservoirs in a relaxed 2-km stroll, entirely shaded and alive with birdsong — an ideal contrast to the harbour bustle below.

The Reservoirs and Their Monuments

The upper and lower reservoirs were built in 1932 as the last reservoirs constructed on Hong Kong Island; atop the magnificent dam, visitors can enjoy beautiful valley scenery that shifts with every season.

The dam structures, valve houses, pump houses and the elegant bridge below the upper reservoir dam are all Declared Monuments of Hong Kong — colonial engineering that has aged into something quietly beautiful.

Ambitious Hikers, Take Note

For those with more time, the Aberdeen Reservoir to Victoria Peak route covers 4.3 miles with 1,794 feet of elevation gain, rewarding hikers with breathtaking vistas of Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon Peninsula.

The trails are nicely paved and family-friendly on the lower loop, with good chances of spotting birdlife and butterflies, especially in autumn.
