Yanahuara Viewpoint (Mirador de Yanahuara)
Ten sillar arches stand in a row at the edge of Yanahuara, each one carved from the same pale volcanic stone as Arequipa's oldest churches — and each one framing, when you look through it, the cone of Volcán Misti rising over the city below. The arches are not enormous. What stops you is the precision of the view: Chachani to the left, Pichu Pichu to the right, the Chili River threading through green fields in the valley, and Misti dead centre, as if the whole thing were arranged for a photograph taken a very long time ago.
Set into the stonework in bas-relief are verses by Arequipa's poets and thinkers — Alberto Hidalgo, Percy Gibson, Francisco Mostajo, among others — so reading the arches is a slow walk through the city's literary conscience.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who come back tend to arrive twice: once at midday to read the inscriptions properly in clear light, and again at dusk when the volcanoes go pink and the city below lights up in stages. The cobbled streets behind the plaza, lined with sillar-fronted houses and small gardens, reward a slow loop before or after — and queso helado from a nearby vendor is worth tracking down.
The story behind Yanahuara Viewpoint (Mirador de Yanahuara)
The name Yanahuara reaches back before the Inca, to a pre-Columbian culture that settled along the banks of the Santo Tomás river. The district was formally declared a town in 1870, a century before the viewpoint as it stands today took shape.
The archway, fountain, and plaza renovation were inaugurated on November 8, 1970, under Mayor Dr. Guillermo Ballón Landa, as part of a broader effort to mark Yanahuara's civic identity. The ten neoclassical arches — built from sillar, the white volcanic ashlar quarried from the slopes around Arequipa — were already standing in the 19th century; the 1970 works formalized the space around them. A further expansion in 2011 added the Crystal Viewpoint, a glass platform lifted by crane, though the sillar arches remain the reason people make the walk.
Good to know
Two kilometres from Arequipa's centre — a 20-minute walk or a five-minute taxi ride for around five soles. Entry is free at any hour. Mornings are quieter; sunset draws crowds. Bring a layer: even on warm afternoons the elevation and wind off the volcanoes can surprise you.
April through November brings reliable sun and dry air, with midday temperatures around 20–24°C — comfortable for lingering. June through August nights drop sharply, sometimes to 5°C or below, so an extra layer matters if you're staying for sunset. January through March sees occasional rain, which can soften the views but thins the crowds.

Just a 20 minute walk from the plaza, with some authentic Peruvian restaurants (filled with locals) on the way with menu de Dias like 10soles! This is a little hidden gem of Arequipa just down eve consuelo, before the bridge on the next st over as well!! Enjoy No tickets needed but 1pen to pee haha!
A beautiful place to visit with a great atmosphere. Right next to it, there’s a Uruguayan restaurant that I highly recommend for meat lovers the quality and taste are absolutely worth it. Definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss!
Stunning, worth visiting on a sunny day, can be very busy and full of souvenir vendors/cafes etc. Only a short walk from the historic centre, beautiful spot for pics
A beautiful space in Yanahuara - view to snow capped mountains was picturesque, lovely cathedral and park area to relax in. There is also a small lane that displayed artwork - great outdoor art gallery - fantastic find. Some great eateries to be found around the viewpoint. Very popular for photographs. Loved this area!
Lovely viewpoint that gives a great view of Misti and the city. We came up for sunset and it was perfect. Plenty of bars and restaurants around for after the sun sets too!
