Huacachina Oasis
A natural lagoon sitting in a bowl of sand dunes that rise up to 500 metres — Huacachina is the kind of place that looks implausible until you're standing at its edge. The water holds a deep greenish tint, palm trees lean over the boardwalk, and all around, the dunes press in close enough to feel theatrical.
The village itself is small — around a hundred permanent residents — and you can walk the full perimeter of the lagoon in under twenty minutes. What draws people here is the scale of the surrounding desert and the peculiar stillness at the centre of it: a working oasis in the Ica region of southwestern Peru.

The story behind Huacachina Oasis
Huacachina formed naturally, fed by underground aquifers beneath the Ica desert. By the early twentieth century, it had developed a reputation for medicinal waters, and Peruvians began arriving to take the cure. By the 1960s it had evolved into a proper summer resort — hotels, a boardwalk, spa treatments — and in 1991 the oasis appeared on the back of the 50 nuevo sol note, cementing its place in the national imagination.
The water level became a problem in the early 2000s, when increased well-drilling in the region drew down the aquifer. By 2015, local businesses were pumping water directly into the lagoon to keep it viable. In 2016, scientist Marino Morikawa announced a restoration project using a nanobubble filtration system, though its current status remains unclear.

Buses from Lima to Ica (Cruz del Sur or Oltursa) take four to five hours; a taxi from Ica to Huacachina is another ten minutes. Entrance to the oasis is free; dune access costs S/ 3.60 soles. Skip swimming — the lagoon water is not clean. Come midweek to avoid Lima day-trippers, and bring cash: there are no ATMs.
The desert climate means warm, dry days year-round, with daytime temperatures reaching 30–35°C in summer and dropping sharply after dark. June through August brings occasional morning fog from the coast, which usually clears by early afternoon. The shoulder months — April, May, September, and October — offer the most comfortable conditions, with highs around 25–30°C and cooler but not cold evenings.

An absolutely incredible place and without a doubt a must-visit destination. From the moment you arrive, you can feel how special it is the landscapes, the atmosphere, and the overall experience make it truly unforgettable. Spending two days here is just perfect. It gives you enough time to explore, enjoy the surroundings, and really take everything in without feeling rushed. The tours are very well organized and add a lot to the experience, allowing you to see the best spots and fully appreciate what the area has to offer. One of the highlights and something you absolutely shouldn’t miss is watching the sunrise and sunset from the top of the dunes. Make sure to climb up early, especially for sunrise, as the peacefulness and the view are simply breathtaking. Seeing the colors change over the endless sand is a magical experience that stays with you long after you leave. Overall, this place exceeded all expectations. It’s one of those rare destinations that offers both adventure and tranquility at the same time. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience.
What an experience from start to finish. Early pick up so can get plenty of activities in. I went with IN Margarita MAGIC CUSCO TRAVEL and they didn’t let me down. Driving over the dunes and then surfing them was amazing. Would recommend this to anyone travelling through Peru.
The Huacachina Oasis is a highly-recommended destination for tourists exploring Peru. The oasis is so beautiful with hotels and dining spots that still provide comfort amidst the seemingly provincial ambience. The desert activities such as dune-bashing, sandboarding and paragliding are a must-try. My personal favorite was climbing the peak that gives you that glorious view of the oasis, best viewed during sunset!
Quntu is a very nice and old-fashioned place to eat at. The food was spectacular and made with organic and locally farmed produce. Ricardo the owner explained this to me and that the food isn't made with too many spices or condiments. I highly recommend this place for food and drinks!!
I love this place: it's variety of diverse spaces and the vibe you get from them. I've been at huacachina a handful of times. For starters is the dunes themselves, which you can walk, either early in the day or by the sunset. You will be offered the tours on "tubulares" with the option of gliding on a sandboard... up to you! Then is also the side of the oasis itself, the birds and fish composing its ecosystem, which you can admire just by sitting in the shores. The restaurants and other businesses around offer good service and great food and drinks.
