The courtyards of Pavia's university have been accumulating chalk dust and ambition since 1361, and walking through them now you can still feel the layering — nine interconnected quadrangles, each one opening onto the next along Corso Strada Nuova. Students cut across the same flagstones where Leonardo da Vinci once worked anatomy problems alongside professor Marcantonio della Torre, and where Alessandro Volta eventually presented the electric pile to Napoleon in the Teatro Anatomico.
This is a city campus in the truest sense: no single gate, no perimeter fence, just university buildings woven into Pavia's streets for seven centuries. The Palazzo Centrale's historical theatres, the neoclassical Aula Magna with its Corinthian columns, and the Renaissance San Matteo hospital complex the university absorbed in the 20th century are all part of the same sprawling, walkable whole.

People who come back tend to time it around the museum's Saturday hours — the Museo per la Storia dell'Università opens at ten and rewards slow looking. The Teatro Anatomico, where Volta demonstrated his battery, is the room that stays with you. Bring a map of the courtyards; the transition from the 'Legal' quad to the 'Doctor' quad is easy to miss.
The story behind Università degli Studi di Pavia
The university traces a formal founding to 1361, when Galeazzo II Visconti secured a decree from Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV establishing a Studium Generale with privileges equal to Paris, Bologna, and Oxford. The precedent, though, goes back to 825, when Emperor Lothair I set up a school of rhetoric in Pavia for kingdom officials. In 1485–1490, Ludovico il Moro donated the Palazzo Azzone Visconti on Strada Nuova, and by 1534 a renovation had created two distinct courtyards — one for law, one for medicine and philosophy.
The 18th century brought Austrian Habsburg reforms and a wave of construction: Giuseppe Piermarini designed the neoclassical façade in 1771–1773, the library followed in 1772, and the Foscoliana hall was completed by 1782. The Aula Magna came later — designed by Giuseppe Marchesi, begun 1845, finished 1850. The campus's most recent major addition arrived in 1932, when the university took over the former 15th-century San Matteo hospital complex, a cruciform Renaissance structure decorated with terracotta.
Good to know
Trains from Milan run every ten minutes and take around thirty minutes. Main courtyards are free and open daily. The University History Museum closes in August and has limited weekday morning hours — check before going. Campus tours start at 10 a.m. and run two to three hours. April through June and September through October are the most comfortable months.

The top of the top courtyards that follow one another with beautiful statues... I now understand the importance of this University
Unfortunately, my experience with the foundation program in Pavia was disappointing. The overall organization leaves much to be desired, and communication with students is often confusing and ineffective. In particular, the coordinator, Elena, proved to be incompetent: she struggles to communicate in different languages and appears to lack a thorough understanding of her duties. Students often receive inadequate support or clear information about schedules, exams, or deadlines. I expected a more professional environment, considering it's a university program for international students. I don't recommend it.
They gave us a separate student card to use the restroom in the center.
