Teatro Romano di Cassino
The theatre is 53 metres wide and was built to hold 2,500 people. Standing inside it now, with grass threading through the stone and the hill rising behind the cavea, that scale takes a moment to settle. This is one of the Roman world's working theatres — not a ruin cordoned off behind glass, but a stage that still receives audiences in summer, the ancient tiers supplemented by modern seating that arrives and departs with the season.
The site sits within the Archaeological Area of Casinum, alongside a preserved stretch of the Via Latina — the road that once connected this town to Rome. The Mausoleo di Ummidia Quadratilla is nearby, and the connection between that name and this theatre is closer than it might seem.

The story behind Teatro Romano di Cassino
The theatre was built during the Augustan era — sometime within the reign of Augustus, 27 BCE to 14 CE — using the natural slope of the hill to support the cavea's tiers. A covered gallery ran along the top; spectators entered through side corridors called parodoi; the stage building had three doorways. Fragments of a statue of Octavian Augustus found during excavation, including a head and draped shoulder, are now held in the National Archaeological Museum of Cassino.
In the second half of the 1st century CE, the noblewoman Ummidia Quadratilla — whose mausoleum stands nearby — is attributed with renovating the theatre, her father having been connected to its original construction. The site then slipped from record until 1936, when archaeologist Gianfilippo Carettoni excavated it. Restorations followed in 1959 and again in 2001.

Regional trains on the Rome–Naples line stop at Cassino, about 1.7 km from the archaeological area — partly uphill. Parking is available on site. The theatre closes Mondays; summer hours run to 19:30, winter to 16:00. Terrain is uneven, with steps throughout.
Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures for walking the uneven terrain. Summer is warmer and brings the live performance season, though evening shows can make the heat manageable. Winter visits are quieter, with shorter opening hours.

Small Roman theatre, no access
It's only open on Saturdays and Sundays. There's a handy camper service with water tap in the parking lot.
It's a shame that the Roman theater was closed when we arrived. If I understand correctly, it belongs to a private institution.
The Roman theater in Cassino was a wonderful discovery; I didn't know there was a Roman arena. The time I visited was for a Shakespearean performance, and it was an evening performance. The atmosphere was beautiful, with a lovely play of light. If you're in the area, stop by for a visit; it's definitely worth it.
We were unable to visit the ancient site: theater, amphitheater, and the rest because they were closed for a few days. However, we took advantage of the parking lot (photos) to spend a night in a camper van (with a dumping area). The only downside is that some young people gather there in the evening, so it's a bit noisy.
