Spiaggia di Nettuno
The sand at Nettuno runs fine and pale for roughly five kilometres, backed by a remnant strip of the ancient coastal forest that once stretched all the way to Circeo. Breakwaters keep the water calm enough that the seabed slopes away gently underfoot, and on a clear morning the sea shifts through every shade between turquoise and deep blue.
The beach splits between free public stretches — bring your own umbrella — and stabilimenti balneari where around €15 covers a sunbed, shade and a shower. Kayaks and sailboats are available to rent, and the bars along the shore stock cold drinks and plates of local seafood.

The coast here has been occupied since antiquity. Ancient Antium — predecessor to modern Nettuno — dates to at least the fifth century BC and later became a retreat for Rome's imperial class, who built villas along this shoreline.
The town's more recent past carries a heavier weight. On 22 January 1944, Allied forces landed at Anzio and Nettuno as part of the push against the German Gustav Line. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery nearby holds 7,860 soldiers who died in that campaign. Forte Sangallo, built between 1501 and 1503 under Pope Alexander VI and designed by Sangallo the Elder, still stands at the edge of the old town — its walls a reminder that this stretch of coast has always mattered strategically.

Trains run from Roma Termini to Nettuno on the FL8 line roughly every hour; the journey takes about 75 minutes. July and August weekends draw large crowds from Rome — weekdays or the shoulder months of May, June and September give you the same water with considerably more space.
Summer runs hot and dry, with July and August highs regularly above 30°C and sea temperatures around 25°C by August. Spring and early autumn — May, June and September — offer warm, clear days without the peak-season heat; winters are cool, wet and windy, and the beach is largely deserted.
