Sentiero del Fiordo
The Sentiero del Fiordo drops you from the church of Sant'Elia in Furore's Piazza del Carmine down to one of the strangest pieces of coastline on the Amalfi: a 25-metre shingle beach wedged so deep inside a rock cleft that sunlight only finds it for a few hours around midday. The Schiato river carved this gorge over millennia before anyone thought to put a road across it, and the path follows its logic — steep at first, then easing as the sea opens below you.
The walk itself takes around 40 minutes each way. Above you, the arched Ponte di Furore carries the SS163 30 metres over the gap. Below, a handful of fishing houses — the old Marina Furoris — press together in the narrow space the rock allows.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who've done it more than once tend to time their descent for mid-morning: the sun is on the water by then, and the beach hasn't yet filled with the midday crowd. Coming down on a weekday in May or October, you can have the whole fissure to yourself for an hour. The bus stop on the bridge makes a car-free visit entirely workable.
The story behind Sentiero del Fiordo
The gorge was productive long before it was scenic. In the 17th century, the cold, fast-running Schiato torrent powered paper mills and flour mills here, feeding directly into the Amalfi paper-making tradition that the region is still known for. The remains of three mills and two paper factories have since been restored as part of the Ecomuseum of the Fjord of Furore, a project that began in 1982 and reached completion in 2000.
In 1948, Roberto Rossellini brought a film crew and his lead actress, Anna Magnani, to shoot the second episode of 'L'Amore' in the gorge. Rossellini and Magnani became lovers during production and stayed in a fishing house called Villa della Storta — which Magnani later bought. The arched bridge that now defines the skyline of the fiordo was added in 1962.
Good to know
The SITA bus on the Amalfi–Sorrento route stops on the bridge — no car needed, which is fortunate since parking near Furore is essentially impossible. The trail is free and open all hours. Summers are hot; go early or late afternoon. Allow 90 minutes for the round trip.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons — mild temperatures and good light without the summer heat. In July and August, the gorge traps warmth and the beach is in shade by mid-afternoon, so an early start matters. Winter is mild but weather can be unpredictable, and the beach sees almost no direct sun.

I’d go back there anytime! I have visited that swimming spot multiple times during my road trips. It’s so peaceful and a real local favourite. All you need are some snacks and a few alcohol-free drinks to swim, sunbathe, and relax. You can only get there if you drive. However, there is absolutely no parking, and the roads are so tiny that you can’t even park on the side of the road. I actually had to park my car almost in a ditch! 🤣🤣 But it was well worth it. 😍 There’s a nice little restaurant nearby that serves lovely coffee, if you don't mind a short walk along the main road. One small request: please respect nature if you end up going there. It is still untouched by mass tourism due to its hidden location.
It's a pretty solid beach, but I wouldn't plan too much around it. If there's been stormy weather in the last few days the water becomes muddy and smelly. Go only if the weather has been nice for multiple days. Nice for a few cool photos, but nothing special. There is a small bar nearby with toilets (without locks in the doors 😂)
Quite hard to find a parking nearby (like everywhere on the coast). You will need to look on the roadside. Beach is beautiful, water colder than average (very refreshing!), rocky beach. Easy walk on the stairs from the bridge .
Gorgeous spot and a must-see on the Amalfi coast. Best seen by land as you can also enjoy the beach and surrounding area. Trails nearby, as well as a little refreshment store right at the back of the beach.
I was lucky we were staying at the villa just 2 minutes walk from this beautiful bridge (La Perla di nettuno, ) I was walking there every day , so peaceful place, lots of people there sunbathing but dont worry if its over crowded lots of people coming for a short stay especially the ones coming from far away, but if you go their by bus make sure have plenty of time because some times need to wait 2 hours to get the bus, most buses are full and not stopping ,
