Sentiero del Faro (Lighthouse Trail)
The trail to the Faro di Portofino begins where the village's famous waterfront noise fades behind you. From the center of Portofino, the path climbs west through the Parco Naturale Regionale, past garden walls and the stone silhouettes of Castello Brown and the Chiesa di San Giorgio, before the trees thin and the Gulf of Tigullio opens wide below.
At roughly 2.5 kilometers one way, it takes most walkers between 25 and 45 minutes to reach the lighthouse — a compact white quadrangular tower with a keeper's house attached, sitting 40 meters above the sea. The lighthouse itself is closed to visitors, but the promontory around it stays open around the clock, and there's a small bar where you can sit with a drink and watch the water.

People who've done this walk more than once tend to go early — before 9am in summer, when the path is cooler and the light on the gulf is still soft. Wear shoes with grip; the trail turns slippery after rain. If you're bringing a dog, they're welcome on the path.
The story behind Sentiero del Faro (Lighthouse Trail)
A lighthouse has stood on the western tip of the Portofino peninsula since around 1870, guiding ships through the Gulf of Tigullio. The current structure dates to 1917, rebuilt during World War I to serve the strategic navigation and coastal defense needs of the Italian Navy — the Marina Militare, which still operates it today under identification code 1675 E.F.
During World War II the lighthouse functioned as a naval observation post. Allied bombing struck the surrounding area hard, yet the structure survived. It has since been fully automated, powered by a solar unit, and its single white flash — visible up to 16 nautical miles — still pulses every five seconds after dark.
Good to know
Portofino has almost no parking, so arrive by ferry from Santa Margherita Ligure or take the bus. The trail is free and open 24 hours. Spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) offer the best combination of weather and manageable crowds. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for the round trip.
April through October is the reliable window, with July and August averaging around 22–25°C — warm enough that an early morning start makes a real difference. November is the wettest month by some margin, and the path becomes slippery and hazardous in wet conditions; winter visits are possible but require caution.
