Sedile Dominova
On the corner of Via San Cesareo and Largo Padre Reginaldo Giuliani, a pair of broad semicircular arches open onto a loggia where old men sit at small wooden tables playing cards. Above them, frescoes fade gently on the walls. This is the Sedile Dominova — the only surviving example of a Palazzo del Sedile still visible in the whole of Campania.
The building began as a gathering place for Sorrento's western noble families, who wanted somewhere to conduct their affairs apart from the common life of the town. It costs nothing to walk in, and most people passing through don't stop.

The story behind Sedile Dominova
The story begins with a street fight. In January 1319, a battle in the courtyard of the Mastrogiudice house left men dead and wounded before Bishop Riccardo intervened to stop it. Out of that disorder, the noble families of western Sorrento — among them the Vulcano, Sersale, Capace and Molisano clans — built a monumental seat where they could govern themselves separately. They called it the Domus Nova, later contracted to Dominova.
The 15th-century structure gained its majolica-tiled dome in the 18th century, the work of a Naples tile-maker named Chiajese. In 1803, painter Gaetano Petagna was paid 52 ducats to restore the inner cupola. The frescoes on the outer room walls are attributed to the school of Sorrento painter Carlo Amalfi. By 1877 the building had passed from the nobility to the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso — a workers' mutual aid society — whose retired members still use the loggia today. In 1909, American financier William Waldorf Astor donated 25,000 francs toward the building's upkeep. The most recent restoration was completed in 2019.

Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m., closed Monday — though hours can shift, so check locally. Free to enter. The loggia and inner room take perhaps twenty minutes; there's no separate circuit to follow. Via San Cesareo is a short walk from Corso Italia, Sorrento's main spine.

Great food here with ample seating inside or (preferably) outside. Funny wine selection in that they tell you only the type of wine (like "Amarone") but not the vineyard that produced it. We enjoyed the prosciutto with melon, eggplant parmigiana, meatballs, and spaghetti with clams (and tomatoes). But the star of the show was the baked sea bass, which came to the table whole, and then right before our eyes, the waiter removed the skill and carefully separated the meat from the bones, with the care of a surgeon and the grace of a dancer. And it was delicious, too!
If you are looking for a quick meal without a reservation, this is an easy place to head to. We sat down after doing some shopping and quickly got some great food in front of us. The Mozzarella and Prosciutto appetizer was delicious but the pizza was just ok for how close to Naples we were. When we saw how cheap the final bill was, we left very satisfied with our meal.
Delicious margarita pizza and the Tiramisu is sooo good! We went every day on our trip to Sorrento and always received amazing service ☺️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Stopped by here on our trip in sorento and WOW. Food is very well priced and delicious. We liked it so much that we went three times during the 4 days we spent in the area. The staff were so sweet and even recognized us. Would 100% recommend for anyone travelling here. Don’t forget to try the tiramisu!!
Despite being located in a highly touristic area, Sedil exceeded expectations in every way. The food quality was among the best we experienced in Sorrento—fresh, flavorful, and well-presented. Service was fast, courteous, and professional, adding to the overall positive experience. Pricing was also very reasonable, especially compared to neighboring restaurants in the same area. The location is lively and central, yet the dining experience felt calm and well-managed. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great food, respectful service, and excellent value in the heart of Sorrento.
