Ponte Vigo
Stand at the centre of Ponte Vigo and you are, more or less, standing at the middle of Chioggia's story. The bridge spans the Canal Vena at the point where the town's main artery meets its water, and locals call it the balcony of the town — on a clear day the lagoon opens out to the north in a way that stops most people mid-step.
Built of Istrian stone with marble balustrades, the current structure dates to 1685. Its two facing bas-reliefs tell you something about who paid for it: the northern face carries the Annunciation, the southern the town's patron saints. Four stone lions guard the parapets, though Chioggiotti have long called the column lion at the southern end *el gato* — the big cat — because it looks, honestly, more like one.

People who come back to Chioggia tend to time their crossing early, before the morning fish-market crowd thins out along Canal Vena. The light on the water is different at that hour. The lion column at Piazzetta Vigo makes a reliable landmark for meeting up, and the portico bars along Corso del Popolo are a short walk for a coffee after.
The story behind Ponte Vigo
The first bridge here was built in 1379, during the war between Venice and Genoa — a wooden structure at a strategically useful crossing. It was later rebuilt in stone by the chief magistrate Morosini, and the Istrian stone bridge with marble balustrades that stands today dates to 1685.
The decades that followed added layers of civic pride. In 1762, the podestà Girolamo Arnaldi installed his symbols of office alongside four stone lions on the parapets. Four years later, the podestà Angelo Memmo made Ponte Vigo the only bridge in Chioggia included in a new nighttime street-lighting project — a distinction it held alone.
Good to know
The bridge is public and open at all hours. From Venice, the vaporetto (Lines 5.1 or 5.2) takes around 45 minutes; walk straight along Corso del Popolo and the bridge is on your left. Give yourself 30–45 minutes to cross, read the bas-reliefs and take in Piazzetta Vigo at the southern end.
Summer (May to October) brings the warmest and most reliably pleasant conditions, with daytime temperatures reaching the high twenties in July. Rain falls throughout the year without dramatic dry spells, so a light layer and some flexibility serve any season.

Beautiful Chioggia. It’s like a smaller Venice but with less tourists and tastier restaurants
If you will be in Venice, Chioggia is nearby and is also a very nice place to be visited, as it is also called Little Vecnice, it looks a lot like it. Big variety of fosn and seafood restaurans. You can get here from Venice with the public boat. Short excursions can be taken for 60 minutes arround Chioggia with only 10 euros. Sottomarina beach resort at only 20 mins walking, with wide and very long beaches available. H8ghly reccomend.
Nice bridge. Reminds me a bit of the Rialto bridge in Venice. Very crowded during the day - but on the evenings / nights / mornings really nice to watch and sit on the benches on top.
Beautiful city, and in my opinion nicer than Venice if you wish for tranquility and less commercial place to visit. Much smaller but has the canals, the alleys and the bridges.
