Pista Ciclabile (Sanremo–Ospedaletti)
The old railway line that once carried trains along the Ligurian coast was dismantled in 2001, and what it left behind — a flat, largely traffic-free corridor between sea cliffs and the Mediterranean — turned out to be something better. The 24-kilometre path from Ospedaletti to San Lorenzo al Mare runs past fishing harbours, yacht basins, palm-lined promenades and open beaches, with the water close enough that you can hear it for most of the ride.
The Sanremo section is the most varied stretch: the path threads between luxury hotels and the shore, skirts the old station market area, and then enters the Capo Nero tunnel — 1.7 kilometres of cool darkness lined with illuminated panels carrying quotes and anecdotes from the Milano-Sanremo cycling race, words pressed into the ground at your feet.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who ride it more than once tend to start from Ospedaletti rather than Sanremo — the microclimate there is genuinely mild even in February, the bars near the former station are good for a coffee before you set off, and having the sea mostly on your left means better light for the first hour. Bring more water than you think you need if it's summer.
The story behind Pista Ciclabile (Sanremo–Ospedaletti)
A single-track railway line was completed here in 1872, later expanded to double track, and ran along the coast for well over a century before a new inland route made it redundant. The coastal line was dismantled in 2001, leaving the old right-of-way intact.
Conversion work began in 2008. The path opened in 2014, running the full 24 kilometres from Ospedaletti through Sanremo and on to San Lorenzo al Mare. The Capo Nero tunnel, 1.7 kilometres long, was part of that 2014 reopening — its walls and floor dressed with the history of the Milano-Sanremo race, which has passed through this stretch of coast for more than a century.
Good to know
The path is free and open year-round. Eight rental points along the route — including three in Sanremo and one in Ospedaletti — cover e-bikes, tandems and cargo bikes. As of early 2026, the section between Riva Ligure and Arma di Taggia is closed for bridge reconstruction; check before planning the full 24 km. Public toilets are sparse, so use the bars.
Spring and autumn give you the best conditions — warm enough for shirtsleeves, cool enough to cover distance without stopping constantly. Summer works but the path offers little shade outside the tunnels, and the midday heat between July and August is serious. February is often cited as a quietly good month, particularly around Ospedaletti where the sheltered position keeps temperatures noticeably mild.

Very good roads for cycling and the scenery along the coast is very beautiful.
