Piazza Monte Grappa
The 54-metre Torre Civica rises above Piazza Monte Grappa with the particular confidence of 1930s Italian rationalism — sober stone, rhythmic arcades, and a de Chirico stillness that makes the whole square feel slightly staged. Six streets pour into it from different directions, and the large central fountain anchors the flow.
This is where Varese conducts its daily life. University students claim the cafe tables under the arcades of Corso Matteotti, families circle the war memorial, and by early evening the aperitivo hour draws everyone else in between.

People who come back to Varese tend to time an evening here deliberately. The arcaded stretch of Corso Matteotti, running directly off the piazza, is the place for a Campari spritz before dinner — sheltered if it rains, sociable without being overwhelming. The fountain is the landmark to name when meeting anyone.
The story behind Piazza Monte Grappa
The site was once called Piazza Porcari — or Piazza Padella, after its triangular shape. When Varese was elevated to provincial capital in 1927, engineer Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo was brought in to draw up a new urban plan. A design competition followed in 1934, won by Roman architect Mario Loreti with a project he named "Ardisco." His commission covered the Chamber of Commerce, the Torre Littoria, the INPS building, and several private structures.
To build it, an entire neighbourhood on the south side was demolished. The first structure, the Riunione Adriatica di Sicurità insurance palace, went up in 1935; Palazzo Castiglioni followed in 1938. A major restoration by artist Morandini in 2005 refreshed the square without altering its essential character.
Good to know
The piazza is always open and free. Varese is about an hour from Milan by train, and the piazza is a short walk from the city centre. Spring (mid-April to mid-June) and September give the best conditions. Arrive in the late afternoon to catch the square at its most alive.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons — mild temperatures and good light, though some rain is likely in both. Summer afternoons can turn into thunderstorms quickly, so an evening visit is safer than a midday one. January sits around 3°C, damp and grey.
