Pescheria (Fish Market on the Island)
A small island split off from the rest of Treviso by two branches of the Cagnan River, the Pescheria is where the city does its serious shopping before noon. Stone slabs easy to sluice clean, sheltered stalls on each side, a central fountain, and a lightweight glass roof overhead — the whole arrangement was built for function, and that practicality is still the point. Arrive by nine on a Saturday and you find vendors lowering baskets into the river to keep the catch alive until it's sold.
Outside market hours the island quiets to a park, and the bridges at each end become a promenade. The medieval Ca' dei Carraresi watches from one bank; an old wooden mill is visible from another angle.

People who come back tend to do the same thing: get there early, buy something from the fish stalls, then cross one of the little stone bridges to find a coffee. By the time you loop back, the island has a different quality — less transaction, more conversation. The tavern known as da Muscoli pulls an aperitif crowd as the afternoon turns.
The story behind Pescheria (Fish Market on the Island)
Before 1856, fish had been sold near Piazza dei Signori, but the city — then under Austrian administration — wanted a dedicated space that could be cleaned properly and kept apart from the residential centre. Municipal engineer Francesco Bomben drew up the project; Pietro Liberali conceived the new arrangement. The island itself was formed by consolidating existing natural islets in the Cagnan, though records suggest some form of market activity on the river here may predate the official reorganisation.
The site is older still: in the Middle Ages, mills and small factories occupied these same islets. A later renewal, shaped by architect Toni Follina, gave the island its current form — elongated, like a barge moored in the river — and added the repaved stone surface, the tiled roof shelters, and the steps leading down to the water.
Good to know
The market runs Tuesday to Saturday, roughly 7 or 8 AM until 1 PM; arrive before 10 for the best selection. Afternoons you'll find an empty island. Entry is free. The Ca' dei Carraresi is a minute's walk away.
The market runs through all seasons, but winter mornings on the Cagnan can be raw and damp — dress accordingly. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to linger on the bridges; summer is warm and occasionally humid, though the shade of the market shelters helps.
