Behind Cassino's cathedral, the River Gari surfaces from underground and splits into two branches, forming a small lake shaded by weeping willows. Nutrias paddle through the still water with unhurried purpose, and the sound of the current carries toward the old Terme Varroniane downstream. This is the Villa Comunale — officially the Parco XV Marzo 1944 — the main public park in a town that knows how to carry heavy names lightly.

The story behind Parco Pubblico di Cassino
The park's full official name — Parco XV Marzo 1944 — marks one of the most destructive single days in the town's modern history: the date when 435 Allied bombers reduced Cassino to rubble during the Battle of the Gustav Line. The name is not decorative; it's a record.
The land itself has older resonances. Cassino sits above the largest underground water basin in Europe, and the Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro chose this valley for his villa partly because of that water. The Gari's re-emergence in the park, dividing into branches that form the small lake, is a continuation of a hydrological story the Romans already understood well.

The park is a short walk from Cassino railway station, which has been serving the town since 1863. No admission fee is documented. Pair a visit with the nearby Anfiteatro Romano or the Mausoleo di Ummidia Quadratilla, both within easy walking distance. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures.
From May through October, temperatures run between 21°C and 29°C — warm enough for the willows to be in full leaf and the water to catch afternoon light well. Winter brings fog into the valley and cold, damp rain; the park is quieter then, and the bare willows read differently against grey water.

Nice clean park with several playgrounds a few older and one newer, and many nice park benches to relax and enjoy the beautiful views. The stream running through is crystal clear and many nice monuments and sculptures placed through out the park. A nice family friendly place to spend a few hours.

The park could be a lot better. Sometimes in the year they let the grass grew high, like 30cm, and it is unpleasant if you want to rest on the grass when it is too high. There was once a wooden bridge who used to link the two sides of the park, after years of damages and no mantainance it was removed and still not replaced, now you have to make the long way to go from a side to the other of the park. Good thing is that they are working on the soccer camp, once it was a concrete field now it is being replaced by syntethic grass. At its back there was a street art decorated wall that was unfortunately ruined by vandals. But it is a good place where tot spend the afternoon after all, specially during summer when it is hot and you can rest at the shadow of a tree and even walk with barefoot in the river.
The park views is very good and such a fresh breathtaking point early in the morning..
