A hologram of a monk stands in a darkened room and tells you, quietly, what it was like when the bombers came. There are no tanks here, no rows of uniforms behind glass. The Museo Storico della Battaglia di Cassino works differently — through cinema, sound design, set construction and oral testimony, spread across thirteen multimedia rooms in a low-slung complex of six pavilions near the Gari River.
The museum opened on 11 July 2005, timed to the 60th anniversary of the battle that reduced this valley to rubble, and it has always been more theatre than archive. A diorama maps the troop movements across the surrounding hills. Soundtracks shift room to room. Letters and photographs pull the story down to individual people — soldiers and civilians — rather than leaving it at the level of strategy.

The story behind Museo Storico della Battaglia di Cassino
The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage funded the museum for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Cassino, commissioning Officine Rambaldi Spa to design and build it. The creative lead was Carlo Rambaldi — the Oscar-winning special effects artist behind E.T., Alien and King Kong — working alongside storyboard artist Gianpiero Perri, set designer Emmanuel Bourgeois and technical coordinator Jean François Touillaud. The result, which opened 11 July 2005, was conceived from the start as an experiential space rather than a conventional exhibition.
In March 2024, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the destruction of Montecassino, a major renovation was completed — removing physical, sensory and linguistic barriers and bringing the installation up to full accessibility standards.
Good to know
Tours run at fixed times (09:30, 10:30, 11:30) and booking in advance is essential. The museum is a short walk from Cassino train station. Closed 24–26 and 31 December, 1 January, and 8 December. Allow one to two hours. Fully accessible for visitors with disabilities, including visual impairments.

Came through Casino and thought we might see the exebition. Im really glad we did! Its remodled 3 years ago. Lots of videos and stuff to see. We were guided through the exebition by an english speaking guide and all videos could get english subtiles! If you are in the area I highly recommend you to visit this exebition.
A fantastic museum, judging by previous reviews it seems they have listened, in areas. Prices now 5 Euro a person, very reasonable for the experience you get and doesnt reflect some older reviews about high cost. One area not publisised well is the timings and opening hours. The tour itself is run 3 times daily 0930,1030 and 1130 and lasts around an hour. It's an interactive guided tour and so isnt a place you can just turn up to outside of these times. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. There is a fantastic display that highlights the order of the battles and depicts the locations of the troops on the ground - moving with each battle. I unfortunately didn't get a photo but its near the end of the tour. For me, it joined much of the dots in understanding the battle and so may have been useful context earlier. A must visit for any battlefield tour visitors.
Great museum. I liked it very much, it is not so much about seeing things (guns,helmets,tanks,etc) that remained from the war. In my opinion, the objective of this museum is to make us feel and understand what the soldiers and citizens went through in this war... how horrifying it was... it is a audiovisual museum!
Powerful and moving experience, helped by modern multimedia exhibits. Backed up by in depth info. Escorted tour was excellent.
A bit of an odd one this. The tour is guided but in our experience that meant being moved from room to room by a guide who then pressed the appropriate button. Friendly and well presented but for a place with such a history to tell it was decidedly lacking. Seems a missed opportunity.
