Museo e Tesoro del Duomo di Monza
The museum sits beneath the cloister to the left of the Duomo, reached through a door that feels almost incidental. Down here, in an underground structure designed by architect I. Battistoni, the treasury of one of Europe's oldest Christian dynasties is laid out with unusual calm: ivory diptychs, silver liturgical pieces, and objects that passed through the hands of a Lombard queen in the sixth century.
The star of the collection is the Corona Ferrea — the Iron Crown — kept in the Chapel of Theodolinda alongside 45 Zavattari frescoes in the international Gothic style. Tradition holds that the narrow iron band inside the crown was forged from a nail of the True Cross.

People who come back tend to book the combined ticket — museum plus chapel — and arrive at least fifteen minutes early for the Theodolinda visit, which is capped and guided. The 'passport' you receive at the ticket desk, stamped at artistic sites across Monza, turns out to be genuinely useful rather than a gimmick.
The story behind Museo e Tesoro del Duomo di Monza
Queen Theodolinda, a Bavarian princess who married two successive Lombard kings, commissioned the original basilica toward the end of the sixth century. By 603, when her son Adaloald was baptised here, the building was essentially complete. The treasury she assembled — silver pieces, liturgical objects, the Iron Crown itself — formed the core of what the museum now holds.
The current cathedral structure was largely rebuilt between 1300 and 1346 under the Campionesi family of architects, with Matteo da Campione adding the marble facade between 1390 and 1396. The bell tower, 75 metres tall, was begun by Pellegrino Tibaldi in 1592 and finished by Ercole Turati around 1606. The museum itself was formally established in 1963 as the Museo Serpero, named for the section dedicated to the early medieval treasury.

Enter from Lambro 2, on the cathedral's left side. The museum is closed Mondays; ticket office closes at 5:30 pm. The Chapel of Theodolinda requires advance booking — on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, booking is by phone only (+39 039 326 383). Photography is prohibited in the chapel. The complex is only partially accessible for visitors with mobility difficulties.

climbing 500 stairs up and then descending 500 stairs down it is not as bad as it sounds since the steps are small I guess they are intended for smaller stature people on the middle ages. Superb view as expected but because of immense height , most of sights are no longer seen
Impressive treasury. The core of exhibition is a set of late antiquity and early middle ages artifacts. I adore this style: heavily golden and a lot of large gems, no way to find two similar ones. So many centuries had passed before this "imperfection" started to be so desirable in the modern art styles. I was also impressed with a diptych portraying Stilicho and his wife - such a touch to the history of the last days of Western Roman Empire it was. Iron Crown is located in the church in Theodelinda Chapel, ask on the museum desk how to get there if you want to see this relic.
In my opinion this is one of the most incredible medieval museums in Europetotally underrated, but not didactic enough. There is not much left anywhere of the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the early Renaissance. This museum has several unique pieces of jewelry, the crown of with the iron nails, and every day articles. It's a bit of the missing link of what happened after the call of the Roman Empire. The museum is not interactive so it is more adequate for people with some background knowledge of the period and who already know they live history. We spent a whole afternoon here.

An interesting museum related to the Cathedral, also including many relevant historical items -and of course the most important one is the Iron Crown. Everything is well exposed, easy to understand, the guide was very good, and we had a great time visiting it.
