Museo del Sannio
The Museo del Sannio spreads across several buildings in Benevento, but its heart sits in a 12th-century Romanesque cloister that forms part of the Abbey of Santa Sofia complex — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, archaeology, medieval art and contemporary work share the same address, and over 50,000 objects trace the Samnite people, the Roman occupation, and everything that accumulated in this corner of Campania after them.
The museum's reach is unusual for a provincial institution: sections occupy the Rocca dei Rettori, the cloister, Palazzo Casiello, and even a church repurposed as a video museum dedicated to Trajan's Arch. A combined ticket covers all of them across two days.

People who return tend to split the visit deliberately — cloister and archaeology on day one, the Rocca's history rooms on day two. The €6 combined ticket is valid for 48 hours, which makes that easy. The Sant'Ilario a Port'Aurea video museum is short but worth the detour if Trajan's Arch has already caught your eye nearby.
The story behind Museo del Sannio
The museum's origins go back to 1806, when Talleyrand — then Napoleon's appointed Prince of Benevento — founded a collection in a former Jesuit house. After Napoleon's fall the building reverted to the Jesuits, but the collection persisted. The Province formally established the Museo del Sannio on 4 September 1873, drawing together materials from the Jesuit College, items the municipality had been gathering since 1865, and privately purchased works.
Architect and archaeologist Almerico Meomartini, who had just restored the Rocca dei Rettori, became the museum's first director in 1893 and chose the Rocca as its seat. In 1929 the main collections moved to the Abbey of Santa Sofia complex after the province acquired it. Decades later, director Elio Galasso opened the museum to contemporary culture — painting, installations, music, theatre — a direction it has held since 1973.
Good to know
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00–19:00. The combined ticket (€6 full, €4 reduced) covers all five sites and is valid for two days — worth planning around. From the Cathedral car park it's a seven-minute walk. Allow several hours for the main cloister and archaeology rooms alone.

Excellent museum set over two sites to each side of Sofia Church. Lots of artworks, pottery collections, paintings and more. Lovely terrace and courtyard as well. Get the €6 ticket which gives you access to other museums. An enjoyable museum.
Great Museum - don't miss the phantastic cloister, but the rest is well worth a visit as well!
The musuem has a very unique design of Medieval times which I have never seen in any places before. There are so many art pieces and any historic pieces were presented and well preserved in here.
World class cloister, restored very well. Could spend hours examining and interpreting the images on the capitals. Fascinating museum, not to be missed is the really intriguing Gnathia ware from Apulia. Somewhat underplayed by the curators, I felt. Superb pair of minimalist pelicans in photo attache and what in the middle of them???
This is one of the most interesting museums I have ever visited in Europe. It is very rich in archeological findings. The staff is very friendly. You must visit!!
